Our Medium Fine Bark is a great product for weed prevention and water retention. The size of the Medium Fine Bark is roughly 1" to 1.5" minus unscreened. The pieces mostly range in that size, but larger or smaller pieces can be found. Our bark is Hemlock and Fir, untreated, "straight from the mill," and not color-dyed. Its natural reddish-brown color is a nice contrast to the greenery in your flower beds. The benefit of the Medium Fine Bark is that it tends to last longer because the bigger pieces take longer to break down. On the other hand, over time, the larger pieces tend to fade faster than the finer pieces, which is easily livened up by running a rake through it.
It is also occasionally used in indoor arenas for horse footing.
Our Super Fine Bark is a great product to use for weed prevention and water retention. The Super Fine Bark goes through a 1/2" screen, resulting in a nice uniform texture. Without the bigger pieces, the finer screened product tends not to be wasteful when raking up your yard. The smaller pieces also fade at an even color over time. Our bark is Hemlock and Fir, untreated, "straight from the mill," and not color-dyed. Its natural Reddish-Brown color is a nice contrast to the greenery of your flower beds.
When wood products are stockpiled, heat is created, and the composting process begins. The longer the bark sits in a pile, the darker it becomes. Like all other mulches, the Black Bark fades. When it dries, it turns on the grayer side. The composting process also causes the larger pieces to break down into finer pieces. Keep in mind that some pieces do not break down as quickly as others, so it does not have a uniform look. Compared to fresh bark, black bark does not leech as much nitrogen from the soil, but it tends to break down faster as it has already begun to compost in the pile.
